Traditionally from a retail point of view, “Black Friday” is that Friday after the US Thanksgiving when retail shops begin their Christmas campaign. Interestingly, I saw a number of Christmas displays in some stores a couple of weeks ago and heard Christmas Carols playing. It is not a holiday, but because the US Thanksgiving Holiday is on the fourth Thursday of November, many employers will give the Friday off as well to make for a longer “Long Weekend.” This means that there are the potential for many more people to go out shopping on the Friday following Thanksgiving – and is the only long weekend and holiday prior to Christmas.

As well, for many retailers, “Black Friday” is the day when they begin to come out of the “red” and are into the “black” – earning profits. It’s amazing to me to think that so many retailers take a loss for almost 11 months of the year, and they do not see profit until almost December.

If you are in the USA, I hope you had a fantastic Thanksgiving and will have a profitable “Black Friday.”
