“How can I change my thoughts?” It’s a question that is often asked, especially when a person is thinking negative thoughts and can’t seem to get them out of their mind. This is often called “self-talk,” and is the conversations that you have with yourself in your mind.

Is there anything you can do to take control of those thoughts and how you think? Yes! You can take control of your thoughts and change them by using a technique that involves substituting positive words for the negative words. By making an effort to do this, you will discover that your habitual way of thinking can be changed. You must of course, make the efforts to change your thinking and then consciously repeat positive expressions to yourself.

You may not believe that you are a capable person full of potential, but you can change that belief by telling yourself over and over again that you are full of potential. One of the things I learned from the “Maximum Achievement Program” was to repeat, with enthusiasm, several times a day, “I like myself! I like myself!” By focusing on the positive you begin to eliminate the negative thoughts - and - get them out of your mind!

And it really is that simple. You can choose your thoughts. You can choose what to think about. Many don’t even realize that they do have the ability to take control and change their own thoughts.

One mistake many seem to make is that they constantly dwell on mistakes they have made in the past. This of course has the result of one thinking that they are not “good enough” to accomplish much and of course, it takes up mental time and effort thinking about things one can do nothing about instead of using up time and effort working towards a goal. Instead of dwelling on past mistakes, think of some past achievements and repeat to yourself, “I’m proud of myself!” When you do this with enthusiasm, you are literally changing your mind’s attitude at that very moment!

If you find yourself slipping back into old habits of thinking, start repeating to yourself once again the positive statement. Say it out loud if you are alone. Using affirmations in this manner can immediately improve your mind set and attitude. Perhaps keeping a few affirmations written on a card that you carry with you and can refer to might be a good idea.

A good positive mental attitude is simply a habitual way of thinking. And habits can be changed if you want to put the effort into it. In closing, let me leave you with a question: Do you enjoy having a negative attitude? Personally, I can’t see how people can enjoy that! And if you’d rather have a positive attitude, then what’s a little bit of effort to make that happen?

Keep those conversations with yourself as great ones! I’ve started a list of “mantras and proverbs” that you might want to take a look at and feel free to leave your own in the comment section.
