The first day of winter! Not that you would know it was the first day of winter looking out my window.  On top of the snow we’ve already had, another 10 cm of the fluffy stuff fell last night, and we’re still getting some flurries. The first day of winter - if you mean cold temperatures and snow - was over a month ago.

It’s not that my favorite season is winter either; I prefer the milder temperatures of the spring and autumn best of all. But today is one of my favorite days of the year.  It’s also the day with the least number of hours of daylight, and that is why it ranks as one of my favorites.  You see, for the past six months, the length of the days has been getting shorter.  From this point forward, the days will begin to get longer as far as day light hours are concerned!

Generally speaking, the further north you go at this time of year, there is less and less sunlight hours (with all the cloud and snow that falls, it makes sunlight sometimes quite difficult to even experience).  Where I live, in the days of December, this lack of sunlight and the shortness of the days is very noticeable.   Many find this time of year to be depressing, and apparently it could be due to the lack of Vitamin D - which those with poor diets and lack of exposure to sunshine can become deficient in, that causes the depression.

So I look forward to Winter Solstice!  From now on out and for the next six months, the days will get longer and brighter! Today marks the end, for this year anyhow, of the shortening of the days and from now until June, we in the Northern Hemisphere can look forward to more sunlight after this day ends.

Get out your halibut liver oil capsules or cod liver oil and make sure you’re getting enough Vitamin D into yourself, and then get out and enjoy the season the best you can.  I’m off to the park shortly to do some more skiing with my son.
