Thomas Edison invented the light bulb, right? No! Thomas Edison was not the inventor of the first incandescent light bulb. More below:

In 1820, an Englishman by the name of Warren De la Rue made the first light bulb. It was functional but was not practical for use due to the fact Warren used platinum in its design. Another Englishman, Humphrey Davy created an “arc lamp” using charcoal strips and demonstrated its use to the Royal Society.

Davy’s invention however was simply too bright for indoor use and the battery that powered it lost it’s charge quickly.

At the same time as Edison was working out his ideas for a light bulb, work was going on in England on similar ideas by Joseph Swan. However, it would be correct to suggest that Edison did produce the first practical light bulb with an electrical system that could power it.

It should also be noted that it was not Edison alone - he had a good number of staff and others helping him out.
