… and we can thank God that most of us are not nasty.
I was sitting in my office this evening with the window open. Earlier in the day, I had heard the odd fireworks being lit and set off. But I hadn’t heard anything in quite some time.
As I was sipping a glass of fine red wine while reading up on some various reports, I heard what sounded like a young couple walking up my street. It rarely happens that there is much noise on my street but it does happen from time to time. This particular couple were yelling and cursing each other with language a sailor might use.
As moments went on, the yelling and nastiness subdued. But then, I heard what at first I thought was another round of fireworks - a “sizzling” sound that can be heard when someone sets off fireworks that don’t go “boom,” but instead have a lengthier display of bright lights and colours.
But this time, it seemed to go on longer than normal.. and then I began to smell smoke.
I went to my front door and discovered that some nasty person had lit a plastic wicker chair that sits outside my wooden porch under an evergreen tree, on fire.
There were flames in the evergreen tree. There were large flames from the plastic in the chair. I immediately grabbed a part of the chair that was not on fire, and moved it away from the tree and the porch onto the grass. Then, I was able to extinguish the fire with several large pots of water. I was then able to extinguish some other small fires on the sidewalk that were going under the tree from where plastic had dripped down.
After it was all done, I wondered, “Who would do such a thing?”
If I had not caught the initial fire in time, it is quite likely my wooden enclosed porch would have caught fire. And my porch is separated from the main house by only a wooden door. Although my house is brick, it wouldn’t have been the fire that could have resulted in tragedy, but the smoke entering the house.
Three people, including an awesome wonderful six year old “wee man” could have died if that fire had not been caught in time. All because of the foolishness and stupidity of some nasty person that has no respect for property rights. And even if the fire progressed and no injuries resulted, thousands of dollars in damage could have resulted.
Thank God that the majority of people are not nasty. Thank God that the majority of people wouldn’t try to damage or hurt your property. But.. it does happen from time to time.
What would you do, if you knew a loved one was the victim of some random act of idiotic violence? What would you regret? Tonight, I’m still a bit freaked out by what happened at my front door, but at the same time, when things like this happen, it can help you understand your priorities. What if… Yes, a good question.. not in a fearful way, but.. what would I have done differently or wish I had done differently if….
And yes, there are some nasty people out there.
