One of the sources of revenues that many bloggers have is Google’s “Adsense” program. Optimizing Adsense can be a way to significantly increase your monthly income. Of course, it’s like anything else: You can’t just stick up a website, put Adsense ads on it, and expect to make thousands - or even hundreds of dollars a month. It takes effort and regular updating before your site will even earn enough to get a regular monthly cheque (check for our American readers) to arrive. More below:

Affiliate Confession has a couple of very good articles that you might want to read. But before you go read them, (but be sure you do), read the rest of this article first.

In Part 1 of “How To Earn The Most From Google Adsense,” the blogger discusses some general ideas about choosing niche sites to create and thoughts about what you might want to consider if you are hoping for a significant income from Google Adsense. And some good advice there, I might add. The blogger also points out that their Google Adsense revenues are about $1,300.00 a month. And to Mr/Mrs/Ms Affiliate Confession, I’d say “hats off to you! That’s better than not just the majority, but probably better than 95% of Google Adsense publishers!

Part II of “How To Earn The Most From Google Adsense” gets into some more nuts and bolts of how to monetize your site with Adsense. The blogger is correct in saying that you MUST be aware of Google’s Terms Of Service in how you place ad units, and the dangers of trying to trick or fool people into clicking on ads will immediately get you banned.

But you should read the article. Affiliate Confessions reports how they place ads on sites that seem to generate a CTR - and earns around $1,300.00 a month.

But.. there is a second but: Our experience here is not the same as Affiliate Confessions. In fact, in my office, we have one website that is generating consistently between $4,000.00 and $5,000.00 a month with a totally different placement of Google Adsense. It’s CTR is generally between 12 and 15% - and yes, it gets a lot of traffic.

At the same time, we have another website with pretty good traffic (over 100,000 page views a month) but CTR is very low. We’ve identified the top 10 visited pages on the site - and the nice thing about Google Adsense is that you can create different “channels” for tracking purposes. On those top ten pages, we’re going to create two different channels for them specifically and place Adsense in different positions and see if we can get some improvement in our CTR rate.

And that’s the thing about any kind of revenue generation methods: Test, Test, Test! What works for “Affiliate Confessions” may not be perfect for the visitors you get. Test and Track. And when you’re not happy, adjust. And definitely give the links to “Affiliate Confessions” posts a read as they provide some interesting ways to have the Adsense spider only index parts of your content, which can maybe assist you in displaying the relevant ads that you want. I sure learned something from the posts there!

I’d also like to point out as well that the two sites I referred to above have existed for about 7 or 8 years. There has been a lot of effort put into them especially during the early years. Hours and hours of site promotion work and search engine optimization (SEO). But the nice thing is that today, there are literally very few hours per month that are spent on the two sites - but they continue to generate revenue.

I’m NOT going to tell you that 5+ grand a month was “easy” or “effortless.” Nor did “thousands a month” start coming in overnight. There is a price to pay. Sometimes, that price means very long days. It can mean giving up weekends at the beach. Giving up movie or TV nights. Indeed, I seldom watch TV today except during the winter time when my beloved (but management hated) Toronto Maple Leafs are playing.

But I’ll tell you what: Working your butt off and giving up some things for a couple of years is quite rewarding when you can ease up on the work and still be bringing in 4 to 5 thousand a month and choose to work on then choose to work on some other things, and duplicating what you’ve done with the first project.

And it’s not all about the money. In my office, there are two people, myself included who have been broke, in debt over our heads, gone through crisis, and yes, we know you can be happy with nothing. Indeed, money will only make you more comfortable in your misery, if you are miserable. However, a bit of extra cash that you’ve worked for, paid the price for, can certainly enhance your life - and what you are able to give to others too.

You can’t help the poor by being poor yourself.

But I digress (as I can often do). The point being, yes, YOU can achieve your goals, whether they be financial, relationship, physical, spiritual or otherwise, by knowing what it is you want, and then working, sacrificing some things, changing how you spend some of your time, and learning… and … doing something!

Hopefully, with the two posts by “Affiliate Confessions,” the experience here in my office, and some tests I’m going to try, we’ll be able to help you get closer to achieving some of your goals.
