Earlier this month, I wrote about my Google Page Rank Observations and how I don’t spend that much time worrying about “back links.” If you have good content, other sites will link to your content. I pointed out that many bloggers and website owners probably spend far too much time on obtaining back links instead of creating good content.
Over the past few days, Google has updated their Toolbar Page Ranking. This blog, The Wealthy Blogger, had a PR of 0 up until the past few days. Although we’ve owned the domain for quite a few years, I only began using it and blogging under the domain in March of this year. I have not updated it daily, but have been fairly regular adding new content. I have spent no time at all in trying to build the number of back links to the blog.
It was quite a surprise then for me to see that Google had given The Wealthy Blogger a Toolbar Page Rank of 4. I did expect to see some increase from the lowly 0 it had been languishing it since March, but compared to some other blogs that I assumed would have more back links and traffic than this one, I expected perhaps a PR of 1 or 2. One of my other web properties, even though it has a bazillion backlinks to it and has about 25 times the traffic as this blog saw its PR decrease from 4 to 3.
All the more added observations that lead me to believe that some people are spending way to much time obsessing about their site’s PR and not enough time on adding good original content.

The Wealthy Blogger

The Wealthy Blogger is just a guy who makes money online. I quit my full time job and now I earn a good (some would say very good) income through the amazing medium of the Internet. I know what it’s like to be poor. I know what it takes to drag one’s self up by the bootstraps and keep putting one foot in front of the other to get where you want to go....
Congratulations on your ranking. I agree some bloggers are wasting their energy worrying about PR. We should be focusing on content and not freaking out about a drop or potential drop in ranking. That energy should be directly at the blog. Great posts will cause people to come back for more. Plus, there are so many different variables involved that it is hard to predict or control your ranking.
